Educational background
Is this game political neutral?
We have tried our best to keep the game balanced and allow the student to explore the perspectives they find interesting. We let the student talk directly to sources, and let students make up who is right and wrong. To keep the game realistic, the content of the game is based on real life stories. To ensure ‘Global Conflicts: Palestine’ is balanced with both points of view we have involved a dozen experts that occupy the entire spectrum from pro-Palestinian to pro-Israeli.
What research & testing did we perform?
Academic research on games and learning, including a Ph.D. by CEO Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen, serves as the foundation for the game and has been part of the development process since the beginning. The use of ‘Global Conflicts: Palestine’ as an educational tool was tested with more than 500 students providing Serious Games Interactive with a well-tested and credible product for teachers.
Our studies showed that 90% of the students found the course interesting. 90% would like a similar course again, but most importantly 60% found that they learned more from the course compared to a regular course. Furthermore, the students were more motivated and engaged when using the game than with traditional teaching.
Will this fit into my curriculum?
We have been guided by the curriculum in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom and United States during development. We have talked to a number of teachers that feel the game can be used especially in citizensship, modern history and media studies.
Teacher manuals currently exist for United Kingdom, United States, Germany and Denmark with explicit curriculum ties for teachers.
How long is the playtime?
The game is designed to work within school, so each mission should be playbale in 25-60 minutes. However, we must admit that it very much varies with students game style. Some will think and discuss almost every choice they make, whereas other will be less subtle in their approach.
Why is the game called 'Palestine'?
Some argue that the game should be called Israel as 'Palestine' do not exist. However, the game is not about Israel - it is about the conflict surrounding the region/location referred to by most as Palestine. The most proper title would probably have been the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, we are trying to develop a series where the location is the evolving point - next title will be Global Conflicts: Latin America. The choice of title do not suggest that we support the founding of a country called Palestine. We simply adhere to the fact that this is the most used and precise word for the contents of the game.
Naming the game Israel would be a misrepresentation as we do not deal with the issues Israel faces beyond the question of Palestine/no-Palestine most recently witnesses by the confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
